CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Homura Akemi
Age: 14
Canon: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Canon Point: Before Madoka makes her wish
Character Information: Wiki.
Personality: Homura is a stoic, sometimes cruel and sometimes vulnerable girl. She's got a will of steel and doesn't know when to quit; strongly devout to her goals, Homura has endured a lot and has only more to come. But more than any of that, Homura hates herself. In fact, there's only one emotion strong enough to eclipse that deep self hatred-- that would be her love for Madoka.
Her self-hatred is a very important part of her before Rebellion Story but it becomes a focal point with the movie taking place in Homura's point of view. This is especially true post-movie, where she's traded the salvation of every magical girl in the world for Madoka's mortal existence.
But before Homura called herself the devil she was bully bait with a heart condition. Even then she hated herself. While nudged in the wrong direction by a witch's magic, Homura was still suicidal after her disastrous first day back at school. Having come from an extended hospital stay, most people would have given themselves some slack rather than reacting in such an extreme way. But Homura didn't realize she just needed to get used to school again. Instead she thought she'd be better off dead for the blunders she made that day. It's this way of thinking that becomes the foundation for all her other behavior. This way of thinking only sharpened with the repetition of the timeline.
Why wouldn't it? Homura would be living through the same sequence of traumatic events for as long as it took to get it right. Every failure meant watching Madoka die. Losing wasn't an option, but Homura was only a fourteen year old girl and she made mistakes. So many mistakes. Though with her sharp memory she learns how to avoid repeating them, she can't forgive herself for letting Madoka die even once.
Though the time loops Homura has lived through span around eight years, she hasn't actually matured at all. What traits one might think are a sign of maturity are generally just Homura trying to survive.
Because failure isn't an option and quitting isn't either, Homura developed the coping method of distance. She decided she wouldn't rely on anyone anymore. Before Rebellion Story, it meant pushing all other emotions and people away for the sake of keeping her soul gem crystal clear. For Madoka's sake. It meant focusing on her only hope; it was to be more efficient. Afterwards, it's a habit she can't seem to break.
However, this goal-oriented stoicism lends itself rather well to cruelty. Homura is ruthless in her pursuit of Madoka's salvation. If preventing the contract means exposing Madoka to great emotional hurt, Homura will hurt her. Of course, Homura isn't cruel for cruelty's sake-- she takes no pleasure in what she has to do, but she has to do it. As she reminds a crying Madoka and over Sayaka's dead body, magical girls are no longer human. She will and absolutely has used tragedy to her benefit, no matter how evil it is to do so. But it's just another reason to loathe herself, isn't it?
Though Homura is able to keep her cool under extreme circumstance, she's also not as fortified as she comes off. It's easy for Madoka to bring out her softer vulnerabilities. Be it the heart to heart they have walking home from Mami's place or when Madoka visits her after Sayaka's funeral, it's easy to pull down her walls when so much of her life has Madoka as its central axis.
But she has an uglier side, too. True blind anger is rarer than frustration-- which happens often-- but it happens a few times in series, the most notable being when she goes to give Sayaka a grief seed. Being on the brink of death and refusing help, Sayaka goes off on Homura. She says she looks like she's given up on everything, that she doesn't care about anyone but herself. It sets Homura off enough to make an attempt on her life. The logic behind that being that if Sayaka is going to die, Homura might as well end it early and without Madoka having to see her totally destroy herself. She also gets furiously angry when in Rebellion Story Kyuubey reveals the incubators' plan for Madoka, destroying his body over and over again.
It's also been shown that even through all the hardship of the main series, Homura is capable of faking her way through school. With most people she encounters in her daily life, she's polite and quietly reserved. No one would ever guess the hardship she's encountered when she puts on her fakest smile.
Under the static face of a clock there are gears turning and the hands are always moving. Much like that, Homura presents herself one way but underneath there are many moving parts. Never idle for long, Homura Akemi is always counting down.
